Growing our club and the Hapkido style in Auckland
Over the last couple of months, James has been asking current members what they would like out of the club and he's had some fantastic feedback. We'll look at running with these ideas over the next few months, but for now we're still taking feedback. Among the suggestions:
- Including more input from outside the club
having past instructors such as Paul Q dropping in, members from other Hapkido clubs, and Master Callum coming by training a few times a year all keeps the material fresh - particularly as we're a small club, it helps to see what other Hapkido clubs, or self-defence groups in general, are doing.
- An Auckland Hapkido/Self Defence seminar
For the same reasons as above - connecting with other Hapkido practitioners, having fun and extending our skills beyond the core syllabus: maybe something for early 2012.
- Higher grades regularly taking training exercises
Something we've been looking at doing for awhile - allowing 20 -30 mins per training for senior club members to share their skills with the group. Also allows instructors some time for their own training, and the senior belt learns important lessons about how to run an exercise.
- A national Hapkido Youtube channel
A single online resource where clubs can contribute and share demonstrations of techniques - and at the same time promote the style to the wider public
- More dynamic self-defence
Testing ourselves and our techniques in challenging, dynamic situations that are more like real-life than formulaic exercises in class - and then learning techniques that work in these situations, even where they are outside our core syllabus.
So - some challenges for us as instructors, but also some opportunites for creating more energy, skill and expertise in the club. Keep the ideas coming!
